Q magazine full analysis
Q Magazine was originally called cue do to a phrase often used in music 'Cue the Music', but it was decide to change the name to Q as there was worry that people would confuse it with a snooker magazine- However, they still use 'Q the music' in their tag lines but mainly on their website. This magazine markets themselves to the A to B audience and sells their magazine at around £3.90 a month which quite expensive but actually near enough matches Vogue Magazine. But the magazine features things that a more educated audience would look for and appreciate.
The way which also indicates this is an up-market music magazine are the advertisers, you won't have Lidl advertising here, but you will get top end liqueur brands and the classic one is Jack Daniels as it has quite a big link to music and they pride themselves on high quality long established liquors. The reason why it seems to link to music is because all musicians are seen drinking it on tour, so it's quite influential. The latest models of cars always feature with in the magazines advertising, this will be because the magazine aims towards males more and this is a typical thing which most men admire.
Florence Welsh stars as the the main cover model. The magazine is audienced towards males primarily and this could be to the answer to why she is styled in this provocative outfit, this is something which the singer is not associated with unlike other mainstream artists such as Rhianna. It is a change from a typical 'rock star' male being on the cover as even the main feature is called 'the 100 greatest front men' which initially I do think when reading this that a guy would have been the cover image. In the cover image Florence is surrounded by the biggest city landmarks in the world, especially with London of course and then followed by Paris which are considered as the most exciting and happening cities of our culture with our current generation. The way she has been shot is from a low angle shot this could be a subtle way of the photographer trying to empower women, and try and look domineering, this is challenging the typical stereotype. I imagine the typical background and lifestyle is someone from one of these cities or someone who visits often, this then leads me to think that they must be well cultured and there for crossing into middle class or upper class, this is how the background explains its self. The fact that Florence was a new and emerging artist at the time shows that there is a need for an older generation to be immersed in new talents or at least teach a forever developing generation. I think this because on the cover there are acts mentioned such as Iggy Pop, Freddie Mercury and Axl Rose which apart from Axl most of them are dead and this really does show the targeted audience and whose music generation that they grew up in.
Q Magazine are really traditional with their use of fonts, these usually seem to use Times New Roman most of the time and are quite formal with their choice of fonts and themes. There are no curved edges or anything fancy but again this must be purely down to the target audience, as an older generation they don't want fancy they want straight to the point. Q do this very well. They are also really good at maintaining a constant colour scheme through out the whole magazine consisting of red, black and white. This continues primarily to the contents page where they have a white column, black coloured text and red background on the boxed text, this is almost exactly how the front cover theme goes as well. They have also put the issue number on the top corner and this shows how long the magazine has been established for and therefor generates credibility. The fact that the magazine have also put the link to their Myspace account also shows that this may be a way of reaching out to a younger audience too, however this may not be the case as Myspace has been linked with some serious success stories of stars using this as a way of getting their music out there; so this may be another reason in keeping with the music magazine and with the music trends.
The way Q magazine takes on new and old bands to widen the audience and hopefully introduce different music scenes to its audience is important. We know this as at the time the band 'The Courteeners' we relatively new and up coming (and have definitely succeeded in the music industry, just look at them now!) they have a large central picture on the contents page and in contrast we have Nick Cave who was popular in the 70's and 80's but has recently formed again as the 'Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds'; it is his music which the target audience would have grown up with and this would hopefully entice the readers to pick this issue up as it would have been new news as the time.
Having pull quotes and interesting stories to headlines this makes customers want to pick the magazine up and read whats being said inside, this is especially for city slickers who most probably don't have a lot of time on their hands. It is important for any magazine to catch the readers eye and this is why they do these pull quotes on the outside as it gives the reader a rough idea of the content and hopefully it's something interesting enough for the reader to actually buy. The magazine also has things like a crossword which are usually things that an older audience seem to enjoy as they are challenging. But, unlike NME they do not have a gig guide because this target audience will probably be a little too old for gig where they will be pushed around and also the artist in which they would pay for for and be interested in have either died or retired from the music scene.
In the double page spread for Q Magazine the colours used in this spread and in the image are in keeping with the rest of the magazines theme, these are sophisticated and grown up which appeals to the older audience of 30+, it would be unlikely to use brash colours such as bright pink and yellow etc as these would not be appealing to this audience.
The pull quote which is in red with a red banner above it is the first thing the reader is likely to read when they turn to this page. This pull quote also sets the tone for this article, however on it's own makes little sense, but this is what will make the reader want to read more. Using the informal phrase 'fuck up' this is key as this shows that this audience is less likely to take themselves seriously. This is again important as it shows that the target audience is older but again is not too old to appreciate new music.
The photograph takes up 2/3 of the whole two page spread, this because the image is shot in landscape and to show dominance of the person in the image they have dresses her in a really bold leotard/ body with hot pants. Again they are keeping in colour coordination of Red, White and Black. Q magazine is very image aware, so keeping to this is keeping the image sophisticated, in actual fact the colours used to be used to be provocative but which the image is slightly but it also has a level of classiness so it is in keeping of the magazines morals.
The use of a modern city skyline could symbolise that she is a new icon of our generation or that she is on to take bigger things. The typography of the article as a whole is very formal and the way it has been set out, it has not been broken down into an interview style with the question in bold and the answers given underneath, this can sometimes be a little harder on the eye but again it is aimed at an older audience.

Mood Board: Advertisers
These are the type of advertisers that i would like to think would feature with in my magazine. As I am aiming for a middle and upper class audience these fit in. I know when doing my audience survey that music was a very big interest but I had to be careful that I didn't cross over into music magazine at the same time so, I thought the company Festival Republic would be good as they organise most of the big music festivals as well as some smaller ones. Then companies such as Starbucks and Apple as I believe my target audience may be customers to these companies which relevant. Then the big fashion designers would be major advertisers as not only are they trying to sell their fashion but a lot comes from these labels and this also means a lifestyle, from perfume to accessories. If you really look into it it also heavily features photography which is another subject that scored high in my audience survey, so this could be another way of incorporating the interest into photography in my magazine.

Feature Article Analysis 1
This feature article is from NME and the article is on singer Lily Allen, the feature came out around the time of her second album 'It's not you, It's me' in which the style and the content of this album is very different from her second album 'Alright still'. It was from here she was trying to make a statment of how she had grown up and her background where she grew up in London- here is an insight into what Lily is famous for as well a her music...
''You have this reputation of being mouthy. Do you ever say anything you regret?
Oh yes. I have a lot of insecurities and thats probably why I say the things I say, trying to deflect the attention away from myself. Ive always been rebellious and anti-this and that.
I went to so many different schools but that was my choice, as I was expelled or asked to leave and so I could never make friends. Its something I need to work on but I cant be bothered. Im just a gobby bitch.''- Read more: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/sftw/54963/.html#ixzz2D3b991lc
Then in contrast here is her first interview (with NME) this was after she dramatically changed her style and had her hair cut into a bob when her was amost elbow length- it was a dramatic image change. All these things are supported with in this feature as lilys hair is messy, her dark eye make-up and even her tartan shirt which could be influenced from the punk-rock age; even the font used looks like something the Sex Pistols used. All this could support that here is a new lily and a not so childish lily. The title abouve takes up almost a double page spread which could suggest that this is a message she is keen to get across to the public, and even redeem her self from other peoples presumtions to explain her famous quote ''i'm just a gobby bitch''. The rebellious image that subvert previous opions on Lily because the audience of NME is aimed at the 'individuals' and it is them who will respect this and there for helping Lily into indie audience with them knowing that she has a new album and whole different sound altogether. Lilys fans may not be readers of NME but on the newsagents shelf seen that she is being feature and therefor pick it up, so it is good for both NME's market and Lilys of course.
The text used within the main writing of the feature is quite formal, it looks like Times New Roman, which differentiates from the whole 'rebelious' theme of the feature. This could be the magazine own rebelion for this article.

Q Magazine Contents Page Analysis
Q Magazine are very efficient on maintaining their theme of red, white and black through out, and it is evedent here. This is neccessary as the contents page is just as important as the front cover and to have that flow is also important. The fact that they have an issue number at the top corner shows how old the magazine is and how much history and probably having a superior knowledge on the music industry over other magazines so this is definitly a pull if you're aiming to an older more serious music audience, and this shows how succesful the magazine has been also. Q Magazine have also put the link of their link to their myspace page under the issue number in the top right corner; this is showing that they may be trying to reach to another younger social networking audience as Q Magazine is aimed at an older audience and myspace is something that youngsters seem to be more involved with rather than the adults as such. The idea of together a new and young band with in their magazine, especially 'the courteeners' they are a quite a young and in their time (time when this issue was published) a new band which would probably be listened to by a younger audience. Then there is the likes of 'nick cave' he would be soemone that an older generation would have grown up with as his heyday was in the 70's, so this sort of familiarity should attract this audience to still but the magazine.
The magazine uses a fairly typical contents page layout, with the use of headers like 'features' and 'every month' and the use of bold story titles with red number running down the side of the page to make it easier to read which is perfect for a target audience which doesnt have a lot of time. Other features that would appeal to an audience of around the 30+ mark are primarily Oasis and a band called MP4 as this incorporates an intrest into politics as the band consist of 4 members from parliment. It is intresting though however in comparison as this music magazine does not include a gig guide unlike NME. This is most probably due to the fact that this magazine is aimed at an older target audience who will not attend gigs as such, whereas NME is for younger teenagers who are more likely to attend gigs.

Mood Board for: Fonts
I decided on this selction of fonts as I wanted them to influence what my magazine is about, which is fun, young and cool. If i were to go for something too fancy then it just would not be fitting for my magazine. My inspirations have come from i-D and POP magazine. i-D's font is really plain but in a way it is not boring as the colours they use on it are always bright and the cover image is always striking so this makes up for it. Then in comparison to POP magazine their font is really way out, bright and illustated but they always have a fun cover image too, so it literally 'pops'. I have also thought about drawing out my own typography for this, but this will come later.

Mood Board for: Colour
These are the colour schemes i would like to use with in my magazine, probably not all at the same time unless my main cover image turns out to be dull in colour. This is what Wonderland magazine did with one of their covers, they used all these colours with in the actual photograph which is definitely something i would like to think about, then they had the rest of the text in black and white and the last key word in multicolour again in these colours in a curved shape.

Contents Page Analysis 1
Dazed and Confused is a culture and music magazine which has set their contents page out really clearly with only one one image which almost acts like a masthead and the style of the photography used implies again what sort of audience dazed and confused target to. Compared to most magazines its here where they fill this page up with maximum number of images. I like that dazed and confused haven't done this as its much easier to read and find the specific pages you're looking for.
The usual conventions of a music magazine are to put headings like features and regulars etc on their contents page. Here they have set out their contents page by using words like 'the front', 'the mains' and 'the back' to separate different sections of their magazine. By keeping to minimal colours it makes the page look much more sophisticated and stylish, where as other magazine contents pages tend to be more brash by using as much text and images as possible; this possibly due to the fact they are not so concerned of the look of the magazine compared to Dazed as this is primarily a fashion magazine as well as music. For my own magazine I intend to include both music, art and fashion, although more on a photographic level, so for this it is crucial to appeal to all audiences. Again Dazed have been really unique in the way they have set out this page as there is no use of text boxes unlike most other magazines; but then again they have not had to compromise with space or colours as the only colours used are black and white. However some of the text at the top does over lap onto the image use but here they have simply highlighted the text in white.
Their blend of music and fashion is perfect and very fitting for this magazine with the likes of the XX, because the people who usually listen to this type of music are most likely so be fashion conscious as in a non stereotypical way music genres usually attract the same type of fashion sense. For this magazine to feature Metallica or something of the like would certainly not fit with in the tone of the magazine.

Front cover analysis 3
The colours in this are really minimal for the font and only consist of monotone colours; all apart from the word 'Fantasy'. The background is again really simple as the cover photo has so much vibrant colour in it, this probably why the choice of colour in font is monotone. This cover has much more text on it than all the others that i have analysed but it think it still works and doesnt ruin the main cover photo, this could be something that i look at.
This cover is telling you who is featuring with in this issue of the magazine, but to pick this issue up you would have to know who these people are as they are not widly known; there for this magazine is designed for a specific lifestyle and niche.
The price of this magazine is £5.00 so this would be aimed for the upper class and middle class and the bar code is quite small on the top right hand corner. The masthead is again in monotone but this is Wonderlands normal masthead for all their issue apart from when they do special issues.

Front Cover Analysis 2
On the cover for Dazed & Confused features Beth Ditto who is from three piece indie- rock band The Gossip. She is acclaimed for her outrageous ways and often people forget there are 2 other people within the band, but then again this is why The Gossip are so popular. This front cover is amazing and definitely going to stand out on the shelves! The styling has been done with Andy Warhol like pop-art lips which look like they could have been taken from one of his paintings of Marilyn Monroe. Here she seems naked but only with wearing a wired necklace with these pop art Marilyn Monroe lips hung onto the end of them and one big one placed on top of Beth Ditto's lips, with a glsance look like they could be her own. Her 60's hair cut ties in really well wit the eera of Warhol's paintings, also because the cut is so edgy it creates a dramatic image, as well as her eye make up too.
The colour theme used is very minimal only using threecolours of red, white and black, I think when it is kept to a minimum it definitely creates a much more sophisticated look for the mag and not a commersial pop looking one. The Masthead is not covered behind Beth Ditto’s head but is not harshly covering hers either. This is achieved by having a gradient technique applied to make the bottom of the masthead slightly opaque. Other magazines would usually have the cover models head cover their mast head so this could be because it’s not as well-known and made for more the niche markets. This magazine is published for the people interested in all Fashion, Photography, Music, Arts and Culture.
But while getting inspiration from the magazines that I choose to read they are very much similar in the way of them being set out from the front cover. This certaintly appeals to a smaller market but also to an ever growing current culture of being as individual as possible, I think this type of magazine would sell to a younger generation even if they are not so into arts/photography but purley because it would make the indiviual seem cooler to be seen reading this rather than a gossip magazine, and make the person reading it instantly appear more intelligent. I read these type of magazines not so much for their feature articles but for their photography, it's within these magazines where I get inspired from. When it comes to maing my own magazine photography will play a big part in it, as well as incorporating music and fashion.

Questionnair Results
We carried out a group questionnaire to ask 20 college students about a college magazine. Our results show that 65% of our questionees were Female and the other 35% were Male. There was an astonishing high number of 85% of students who don't read their current college magazine. Then we ask the students to list 3 things that they would like in a college magazine and our top 5 results were, Fashion, College Trips, Music, Events around College and Sport. 60% of our students said that they would benefit from a college magazine and another 60% said that they would like to receive the magazine Monthly. Surprisingly 45% students would be willing to pay for their college magazine and the other 55% said they wouldn't, and when asked how much they would be willing to pay the majority said 50p; so when creating the magazine it would be wise to have the first few issues free then put the maximum price tag of 50p on. 45% of our students also said that they would contribute to the magazine. When asked what would you like on the front cover, our top results came out for Images of Students, Bright Colours and Modern and when asked where they would like to receive it, top 3 answers were Tutor Time, Canteen and Library.

Ideas for my Magazine- Bullet Points
Inspirations: i-D, Nylon, Vice, Dazed and Confused, Wonderland
Target Audience: Ideally my target audiecne would be middle class to upper class as the magazine would most probably be read by graduate or undergraduate Art and Design/Fashion Students. Being sereotypical this magazine would likely to be read by an intelletual and intelligent audience. This magazine would fall into the niche market and most probably be price at around £4.00- £5.00
Colours: I dont have many preferences for the colours that I will use for my magazine, I think it's going to depend on my front cover image. My cover will be quite minimal with the amout of texts used but this is why my chosen front cover image will have to make up for this and be even more eye catching from the shelves.
Fonts: I'm not sure on the fonts that I would liek to use yet, but again something quite something minimal. If it's clean, simple, easy to read and recognise then it will be perfect for my cover.
Advertisers: The advertisers to feature in my magazine would be top fashion designers or top end high street chains as the magazine would be heavily based on fashion, as well as culture and lifestyle.

Front Cover Analysis 1
i-D are renowned for their signature wink on all their front overs. On this one the model and actor Cate Blanchett is winking as you can see but compared to some of i-D’s previous covers they have been more subtle. But here, colour is everything as well as the saying less is more; As if there was lots of text on the cover it would ruin the cover and what i-D are about which is fashion, art and culture. I also think that sometimes not having much on the cover can also make the magazine more interesting to someone who has never heard of the magazine as curiosity overcomes them and makes the person wants to pick it up from the shelf and flick through in hope that they may purchase it. The fact that i-D have marketed their magazine over their logo [the wink] also makes you want to see what other new things they can do with their famous wink, so you wait till the next issue which is produced bimonthly.
The bar code here is on he top right hand side and it quite obvious and has not been made to look subtle. Especially as this cover is quite minimalistic.
There are 6 colours used on this front cover, which on a normal gossip magazine there would be way too much going on. But here it really works as the colours from the photo taken. All the text in i-D magazine are minimal but some have really quirky typography on the covers, this depends on the model on the front cover and what that issue is about.
