Mood Board: Advertisers

These are the type of advertisers that i would like to think would feature with in my magazine. As I am aiming for a middle and upper class audience these fit in. I know when doing my audience survey that music was a very big interest but I had to be careful that I didn't cross over into music magazine at the same time so, I thought the company Festival Republic would be good as they organise most of the big music festivals as well as some smaller ones. Then companies such as Starbucks and Apple as I believe my target audience may be customers to these companies which relevant. Then the big fashion designers would be major advertisers as not only are they trying to sell their fashion but a lot comes from these labels and this also means a lifestyle, from perfume to accessories. If you really look into it it also heavily features photography which is another subject that scored high in my audience survey, so this could be another way of incorporating the interest into photography in my magazine.

Feature Article Analysis 1

This feature article is from NME and the article is on singer Lily Allen, the feature came out around the time of her second album 'It's not you, It's me' in which the style and the content of this album is very different from her second album 'Alright still'. It was from here she was trying to make a statment of how she had grown up and her background where she grew up in London- here is an insight into what Lily is famous for as well a her music...
''You have this reputation of being mouthy. Do you ever say anything you regret?
Oh yes. I have a lot of insecurities and that’s probably why I say the things I say, trying to deflect the attention away from myself. I’ve always been rebellious and anti-this and that.
I went to so many different schools but that was my choice, as I was expelled or asked to leave and so I could never make friends. It’s something I need to work on but I can’t be bothered. I’m just a gobby bitch.''- Read more: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/sftw/54963/.html#ixzz2D3b991lc
Then in contrast here is her first interview (with NME) this was after she dramatically changed her style and had her hair cut into a bob when her was amost elbow length- it was a dramatic image change. All these things are supported with in this feature as lilys hair is messy, her dark eye make-up and even her tartan shirt which could be influenced from the punk-rock age; even the font used looks like something the Sex Pistols used. All this could support that here is a new lily and a not so childish lily. The title abouve takes up almost a double page spread which could suggest that this is a message she is keen to get across to the public, and even redeem her self  from other peoples presumtions to explain her famous quote ''i'm just a gobby bitch''. The rebellious image that subvert previous opions on Lily because the audience of NME is aimed at the 'individuals' and it is them who will respect this and there for helping Lily into indie audience with them knowing that she has a new album and whole different sound altogether. Lilys fans may not be readers of NME but on the newsagents shelf seen that she is being feature and therefor pick it up, so it is good for both NME's market and Lilys of course.
The text used within the main writing of the feature is quite formal, it looks like Times New Roman, which differentiates from the whole 'rebelious' theme of the feature. This could be the magazine own rebelion for this article.

Q Magazine Contents Page Analysis

Q Magazine are very efficient on maintaining their theme of red, white and black through out, and it is evedent here. This is neccessary as the contents page is just as important as the front cover and to have that flow is also important. The fact that they have an issue number at the top corner shows how old the magazine is and how much history and probably having a superior knowledge on the music industry over other magazines so this is definitly a pull if you're aiming to an older more serious music audience, and this shows how succesful the magazine has been also. Q Magazine have also put the link of their  link to their myspace page under the issue number in the top right corner; this is showing that they may be trying to reach to another younger social networking audience as Q Magazine is aimed at an older audience and myspace is something that youngsters seem to be more involved with rather than the adults as such. The idea of together a new and young band with in their magazine, especially 'the courteeners' they are a quite a young and in their time (time when this issue was published) a new band which would probably be listened to by a younger audience. Then there is the likes of 'nick cave' he would be soemone that an older generation would have grown up with as his heyday was in the 70's, so this sort of familiarity should attract this audience to still but the magazine.

The magazine uses a fairly typical contents page layout, with the use of headers like 'features' and 'every month' and the use of bold story titles with red number running down the side of the page to make it easier to read which is perfect for a target audience which doesnt have a lot of time. Other features that would appeal to an audience of around the 30+ mark are primarily Oasis and a band called MP4 as this incorporates an intrest into politics as the band consist of 4 members from parliment. It is intresting though however in comparison as this music magazine does not include a gig guide unlike NME. This is most probably due to the fact that this magazine is aimed at an older target audience who will not attend gigs as such, whereas NME is for younger teenagers who are more likely to attend gigs.

Mood Board for: Fonts

I decided on this selction of fonts as I wanted them to influence what my magazine is about, which is fun, young and cool. If i were to go for something too fancy then it just would not be fitting for my magazine. My inspirations have come from i-D and POP magazine. i-D's font is really plain but in a way it is not boring as the colours they use on it are always bright and the cover image is always striking so this makes up for it. Then in comparison to POP magazine their font is really way out, bright and illustated but they always have a fun cover image too, so it literally 'pops'. I have also thought about drawing out my own typography for this, but this will come later.

Finshed College Magazine

Mood Board for: Colour

These are the colour schemes i would like to use with in my magazine, probably not all at the same time unless my main cover image turns out to be dull in colour. This is what Wonderland magazine did with one of their covers, they used all these colours with in the actual photograph which is definitely something i would like to think about, then they had the rest of the text in black and white and the last key word in multicolour again in these colours in a curved shape.

Around this I tried to incorporate Politics, Fashion, Art, Photography into my mood board. I also had an area (Camden Locks) where my target audience may live or like to visit and I could imagine them most probably being a smoker and like to but coffee from starbucks. I also added Vice and i-D magazine into my mood board as these are the type of magazine that my target audience are most likely to read.

Contents Page Analysis 1

Dazed and Confused is a culture and music magazine which has set their contents page out really clearly with only one one image which almost acts like a masthead and the style of the photography used implies again what sort of audience dazed and confused target to. Compared to most magazines its here where they fill this page up with maximum number of images. I like that dazed and confused haven't done this as its much easier to read and find the specific pages you're looking for.
The usual conventions of a music magazine are to put headings like features and regulars etc on their contents page. Here they have set out their contents page by using words like 'the front', 'the mains' and 'the back' to separate different sections of their magazine. By keeping to minimal colours it makes the page look much more sophisticated and stylish, where as other magazine contents pages tend to be more brash by using as much text and images as possible; this possibly due to the fact they are not so concerned of the look of the magazine compared to Dazed as this is primarily a fashion magazine as well as music. For my own magazine I intend to include both music, art and fashion, although more on a photographic level, so for this it is crucial to appeal to all audiences. Again Dazed have been really unique in the way they have set out this page as there is no use of text boxes unlike most other magazines; but then again they have not had to compromise with space or colours as the only colours used are black and white. However some of the text at the top does over lap onto the image use but here they have simply highlighted the text in white.

Their blend of music and fashion is perfect and very fitting for this magazine with the likes of the XX, because the people who usually listen to this type of music are most likely so be fashion conscious as in a non stereotypical way music genres usually attract the same type of fashion sense. For this magazine to feature Metallica or something of the like would certainly not fit with in the tone of the magazine.

Front cover analysis 3

The colours in this are really minimal for the font and only consist of monotone colours; all apart from the word 'Fantasy'. The background is again really simple as the cover photo has so much vibrant colour in it, this probably why the choice of colour in font is monotone. This cover has much more text on it than all the others that i have analysed but it think it still works and doesnt ruin the main cover photo, this could be something that i look at.

This cover is telling you who is featuring with in this issue of the magazine, but to pick this issue up you would have to know who these people are as they are not widly known; there for this magazine is designed for a specific lifestyle and niche.

The price of this magazine is £5.00 so this would be aimed for the upper class and middle class and the bar code is quite small on the top right hand corner. The masthead is again in monotone but this is Wonderlands normal masthead for all their issue apart from when they do special issues.
